Job mission

Under the authority of the Head of Office and the supervision of the Directorate General of Human Rights and Rule of Law, the Project Linguistic Assistant carries out multiple assignments to meet the overall and specific objectives for the implementation of the European Union/Council of Europe Joint Programme “Strengthening Judicial Ethics in Turkey”, in co-operation with the donors, partners and other stakeholders, and in compliance with the organisation’s regulations and/or donor requirements.

Note: The incumbent may be required to travel within Turkey.

Employment is limited to the duration of the Project (end date 11/12/2017).

Key activities

The Project Linguistic Assistant shall perform the following tasks, in close co-operation with the Project team, and in accordance with the Organisation’s procedures, guidelines and priorities, with a concern for quality, efficiency, accuracy and confidentiality:

- interprets consecutively during meetings between project staff, consultants and national authorities and in meetings where simultaneous interpretation is not provided inside and outside of Turkey;
- translates a wide range of documents including legal and technical documents, project reports; checks spelling, grammar and edits in Turkish and English relevant project documents and correspondence;
- reviews translations done by external companies;
- edits documents and publications when requested;
- updates the information / documents on the website of the project;
- ensures the circulation of pertinent information and documents among the project team and the Office;
- contributes to the efficient functioning of the Office, in collaboration with the Head of Office, the Deputy Head of Office and the project managers.

Eligibility Requirements

This local recruitment procedure is open to applicants already present in Turkey.

Only applicants who best meet the following criteria will be considered for shortlisting.

Qualifications:
Completed full course of general secondary education, followed by a post-secondary qualification corresponding to a minimum of two years studies in translation, linguistics or any other relevant field.

Experience:
› At least three years relevant professional experience in a similar role working with interpretation and translations from Turkish into English and vice versa.
Language requirements:
› Excellent knowledge of Turkish (mother tongue level);
› Very good knowledge of one of the official languages (English).
› Knowledge of French would be an advantage.
Nationality:
› Nationality of host country or one of the 47 Council of Europe member states.
Age:
› Under 65 years of age at the closing date of the vacancy notice.

Essential:
› Professional and technical expertise:
- Proven experience in carrying out corresponding linguistic duties, including administrative experience;
- Experience in contributing to the implementation of international co-operation activities would be an advantage;
- Experience of working in an international environment would be an advantage.
ICT skills: sound computer skills and experience using standard tools in office applications (word processing, presentations, spreadsheet, databases, outlook, internet publications).

The Organisation
